Workshop & Movement tent

The GrassRoots Workshop & Movement Tent is a hidden gem at the festival! It's located in the shade near the Healing Arts Area where you can participate in a wide variety of offerings in an intimate setting. Classes range from upbeat, make you sweat African dance classes to cool you down yoga, from percussion and singing workshops to Indigenous teachings. Take the time to see what the offerings are each year. Seize the opportunity to broaden your festival experience by spending time with some of the festival's amazing musicians, performers, and local community members while they share their knowledge, skills, and gifts!

THURSDAY

Stretch Your Roots Yoga Practice w/ Mikey and Lennessa Shantaya
The Yoga School will offer this all levels experience meant to stretch our roots and lay ground for building an amazing GrassRoots 2017. Workshop Tent, 4:30-6pm

Organic Movement w/ Samantha Johnson
Organic Movement is a combination of Modern Dance, Contact Improvisation and Yoga. Experience your own body’s momentum, energy, shape and placement in the universe and then learn to share with others in the moment, organically, creating movement together. Workshop Tent, 6-7:30pm

Traditional Indian Sacred Fire Ritual for Healing and Cleansing w/ Mathaji Radha
There are two basic energy systems in the physical world: heat and sound. In performing sacred fire, these two energies, namely, the heat from sacred fire and the sound of the chanting of Mantras, are blended together to achieve the desired physical, psychological and spiritual benefits. Radha has been trained for 26 years by Indian Masters who live in remote jungles in India, to perform the sacred fire ritual and chant Mantras. Radha is also spiritual perfectionist, is multi-religious and can answer your questions.  Please join us. Healing Arts Green Space, 6-8pm

Little Buddhas Yoga w/ Britton Dougherty
A dynamic children’s yoga class based in story, song and game for children ages 5-10. Classes are based in connection with nature and self, cultivating listening and awareness, with themes of peace, gratitude and respect. Workshop Tent, 9-10am

Essential Oil Meet-Up hosted by the Healing Arts Staff
What’s all the buzz about Essential Oils? Come share your curiosity and passion about the therapeutic benefits of high quality essential oils. Healing Arts Tent, 9-10am

Reiki I - Attunement and Practicum w/ Tony Clark & Friends
The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words - Rei which means “God’s Wisdom or the Higher Power” and Ki which is “life force energy”. This workshop is open to anyone who would like to experience themselves as a channel for Reiki healing energy. Attunements will occur during the first half of the workshop with the last half devoted to hands-on experience and practice. Level I and II Reiki practitioners are encouraged to join us. AcroYoga w/ Gina Newlin and Friends
All levels, all ages, all people are welcome to join this AcroYoga workshop. This workshop provides a safe environment to explore trust, connection and playfulness. We will combine elements from Yoga, Acrobatics and Thai massage. Sessions may include: asana sequences, partner yoga, assisted inversions, partner acrobatics and conditioning, therapeutic flying and Thai massage. Come sample the many elements of the practice for first hand experience of what makes AcroYoga so uniquely engaging and fun! No Yoga experience required, no partner needed. All are welcome. Women’s Drumming and Chanting w/ Shanti Starr
Shanti Starr is a multi-percussionist & vocalist who tours internationally performing her original music. She lives part of the year in Gambia and has lived in Cuba. She incorporates traditional W. African & Afro-Cuban rhythms into her music and offers workshops in drumming & chants to all ages. Come join Shanti for a women’s drum and chanting workshop, awaken the divine feminine in the power of the drum! All brothers are welcome to come join in dance. Workshop Tent, 1-2:15pm

Moon and Stars Hoop Dance
Moon and Stars Hoop Dance would like to celebrate their 5th year instructing beginner Hula Hoop Dance for festival goers by throwing a hula hoop flash mob during the 2017 GrassRoots festival. Please join us to learn this super fun and beginner level dance. Flash mob time and place will be given to all attendees at the instruction. You are also encouraged to learn the dance and pass it on to anyone you would like to invite to the flash mob. Hula hoops are available for use during both the instruction and the flash mob. Drum Workshop w/ Nana Anim and Wassa Pan Afrika Dance Ensemble
Kpanlogo, originating in Accra, the capital city of Ghana and the traditional home of the Ga people, is a newer, high-spirited style of music and dance advocating responsible freedom. The song is fresh and lively combining social commentary and drum-language. Workshop Tent, 4-5pm

Mandala Song Circle w/ Yael Saar
Chanting and Mandala drawing are two forms of creative expression that go round and round in circles. Both have been shown to have profound healing effects. Yael Saar of Mama’s Comfort Camp will lead chants and simple songs in English and other languages and teach how to draw a simple mandala. All levels of experience are welcome. Kirtan and Sanskrit w/ Damodar Das
Damodar Das and Friends sing traditional and non-traditional style Sanskrit chants as part of a complete bhakti (devotional) yoga experience. Drawing on his 11 years as a full-time professional guitarist as well as his studies with a certified instructor at the American Sanskrit Institute. Damodar Das delicately balances a spiritual engagement that is deep and heart-opening as well as rhythmically and harmonically fun to sing. Workshop Tent, 6:45-8:45pm

SATURDAY

Qi Gong w/ Will Fudeman
Will plans to guide people in enjoying embodied aliveness by teaching several forms of Qi Gong, including Zhi Neng Qi Gong. Healing Arts Green Space, 9-10am

Shamanic Circle w/ Michael McArthur and Anne Sierigk
Get in touch with your inner shaman - explore the art of shamanic journey. In this workshop we will lead you on two “journeys” to get in touch with your spirit guides and connect with your inner power as your own shaman. Workshop Tent, 9-10am

Dharma Yoga with Hawk
This class warms up with the mighty Siva Namaskara Vinyasa as taught by Sri Dharma Mittra and flows into the main poses followed by Yoga Nidra (deep relaxation) and Pranayama (breathing). Hawk will be assisted by the Ahimsa Yoga Teacher Training Sangha. Workshop Tent, 10:15-11:30am

Dance Journey Music Fun with Lou Vogel and Friends
Ease into your Saturday with Lou Vogel (Dance Journey) and Sue Spencer (Make a Joyful Noise), who will tune in to where you are and endeavor to lift you up to another day of dancing! Enclosing the Healing Arts tent to create a healing space and blending vibrations with a variety of musical options played from the heart, they'll send you off moving to your inner rhythms. Get your Flow on with Qi Gong
Join Shawn Tubridy to learn seven simple moves that wake up and move your own healing energy. Where there is flow all good things can grow! Healing Arts Green Space, 11-11:30am

Group Bio-TuneUps w/ Lloyd Katz DC and Friends
Discover the portal into a new energetic shift at GrassRoots Healing Vortex. Introducing Group Bio-TuneUps: a kinesthetic calibrated journey of healing sounds, essences, movements, toning and tapping. Healing Arts Tent, 12pm-1:30pm

Intro to Hula Dance by Hula Hut Polynesian Dance

Dance & Sing with Mokoomba
In the Luvale and BaTonga tribes of Southern Africa, everyone is expected to participate in group social activities, ie to sing, to dance, or to play an instrument. In this workshop Mokoomba will demonstrate how they integrate song and dance. In addition to the vocalizations, Mokoomba will demonstrate the use of sticks and kudu horns to establish rhythmic structure, show some dance movements, and discuss how signs and symbols are all employed to create a song. Participants will learn together with Mokoomba a song and accompanying dance moves. Workshop Tent, 1:30-2:45pm

Cob Building Works
Earth has been used as a building material on every continent, in nearly every part of human history because of its versatility, availability and functionality. In this workshop we will discuss Cob Building applications in the modern world, natural design strategies to improve our well being, and different ways to apply mud in existing structures. As many of us are so far removed from this element in our modern lives, we repeatedly witness the "therapy" that cob offers builders and homeowners-earth is energizing, detoxifying and an incredibly strong building material. Our company: "Cob Therapy" aims to connect to Nature through the Art of Natural Building. Workshop Tent, 3-4:15pm

Children are naturally connected to the spirit world and in this circle we will ask them to explore an animal guide that they may have already or meet one. We will use art, dance and drumming to connect with their power animal. Workshop Tent, 10:30-11:30am

Unraveling Racism: Healing for our Community with Sareanda Lourdes
Together we will explore ideas and actions we can take to revolutionize our community around ending racism. This interactive talk will encourage community feedback and participation. All are welcome. Workshop Tent, 11:45am-12:45pm

The Joy of Singing w/ Elisa Sciscioli & Kristin Sharkey

Recharge Your Circuitry with Multidisciplinary Healing Modalities w/ Beth Gordon and JoAnn Kingsley

Kindfulness in Action w/ Christopher Grant and Daniela Hess
Discover your Self and awaken your kindest humanity with Christopher and Daniela from Yoga Farm. Learn what barriers you place between You and being your Kindest Self.
